So I was talking to someone today who practices corporal punishment at home. Our conversation started when this individual shouted at my child to tell her to be quiet (duh). So we talked a little about discipline and briefly about some of the arguments against corporal punishment. But then I heard a new argument in defense of CP: “Since we live in a world where figures of authority use violence (eg police with batons/guns) to address crime/behavior problems (riots, drunk and disorderly), then it is right to use corporal punishment in the home – it is almost as if wider society condones physical punishment. Children who are spanked at home will understand how to behave around figures of authority”.
